Abstract

Biochemical engineering integrates principles of chemical engineering with biological sciences to enable the large-scale production of value-added products using living cells, enzymes, and biomolecular systems. Over the past few decades, advances in bioreactor design, metabolic engineering, downstream processing, and process control have transformed industrial biotechnology into a cornerstone of modern pharmaceutical, food, energy, and environmental industries. This review critically examines the role of biochemical engineering in industrial biotechnology, with particular emphasis on biopharmaceutical manufacturing, industrial fermentation, biofuel generation, biocatalysis, and environmental bioprocessing. Rather than providing a purely descriptive account, the review highlights engineering strategies that enhance productivity, scalability, and sustainability, while also discussing key technical and regulatory challenges. Emerging trends such as synthetic biology, continuous bioprocessing, advanced bioreactor systems, and sustainable bio-manufacturing are also explored. By synthesizing classical concepts with recent technological developments, this review aims to provide a comprehensive perspective on how biochemical engineering continues to drive innovation and industrial implementation in biotechnology.
