Abstract

The camel is a valuable source of food, wool and hides in many countries, including Pakistan. The animal is understudied concerning the molecular diagnosis of vector-borne protozoa, particularly theileriosis, thus, the present study reports the characterization of the blood of dromedary camels through molecular tools. A total of 126 blood samples were collected from one-humped camels, and the blood smears were prepared and examined microscopically using Giemsa staining. The PCR assay was carried out for the detection of Theileria (T.) annulata, followed by sequence analysis of the positive samples. Thirty-six (34.61%) samples were found to be positive for T. annulata through microscopy and PCR. The disease was non-significantly associated with sex and age, but significantly associated with parasitic infestation. It was concluded that T. annulata was highly prevalent in the camel population of Jhang, Punjab, Pakistan, and higher authorities should take measures to control this disease. Further studies are suggested to investigate their impact on the general health and productivity of animals.
