Framing of Epidemic Diseases—A Systematic Review

Abstract

This study conducted a systematic review of media framing of epidemic diseases. Media frames of both global and regional epidemic diseases are widely examined, including HIV/AIDS, 2003 avian influenza, 2003 SARS epidemic, 2009 H1N1, 2014 Ebola and 2019 Covid-19, etc. It is found that most studies are concerned about the framing of epidemics in Western countries. And public health issues are increasingly politicized in recent years. Blame frame is most frequently used in media coverage of epidemics.
